What is a Tondo plate?  Tondo - a Renaissance term for a circular painting or relief.

These small plates are inspired by the circular Tondo paintings of the Renaissance - but with a modern approach to the artwork. I think of the rim of the plate as the frame for the inner ceramic art image.

The plates are all made from a single ball of clay. A clay disk is thrown on the wheel. Then the image is created in the center. The graphics are made using stencils, photopolymer print plates (created by the artist) or vintage print plates. Underglaze colors are stenciled, splattered, wiped, and brushed onto the center of the plate. The rim is then pulled and shaped to mimic a traditional picture frame. Satin glazes are applied to the rim and reverse. The plate is oxidation fired to cone 5.

Stoneware: 7.875 dia. x 1.375d inches. This is made to be displayed. The reverse foot ring has holes for a hanging wire.
